Cisco 3750 Stacks

Question

We have just purchased a number of Cisco 3750 switches that use the stack wise cables and only use one ip address for monitoring. Does anyone know how to configure ORION to monitor the individual switches that are using the same IP address?

First off, enable syslog monitoring on your switches, and point your switch stack to the syslog server address, which will be your Orion box's IP.

Next, go to Syslog Viewer on your Orion box, then to 'Alert/Filter Rules'. Create a new rule, and under 'Message'/Syslog Message Pattern' enter:

* REMOVED *

This will screen for syslog messages containing this pattern, which typically are generated by a switch member leaving a stack.

You can then take whatever actions you specify. I've set up this rule to send an e-mail to interested parties which includes the IP address of the affected stack. To do so, I include the following text in the message body:

The following stack has alerted that the indicated member switch has been 'removed':

Stack IP Address:   ${IP}

The switch may be DOWN. Check Orion immediately to determine member switch status:

http://[our Orion IP]/Login.asp

Another possibility is to check the syslog messages which alert that the actual stackport on a switch is down. This relies on the fact that if a stack member dies, the stackports on the neighbor switches will go down (obviously) and Syslog will report this change of state.

For this, add a new rule as above, but in the Syslog Message Pattern enter:

* Stack Port * Switch * has changed to state DOWN

This will check all incoming messages and alert you to this state of affairs. Again, I generate an e-mail with IP address to interested parties which says:

"The following stack has alerted that one or more member switches has entered a Down or Provisioned state:

Stack IP Address:   ${IP}

Check Orion immediately to determine member switch status:

http://[our Orion IP address]/Login.asp

If there is no MIB for the stack, then there is nothing that Orion or any other SNMP based network monitoring tool can do for you. You should be disappointed with Cisco not Solarwinds.

This is not an Orion limitation, rather a design functionality limitation of the Cisco stack. quote:Q. Is there a MIB that can be used to monitor the StackWise port status?
A. Currently, No. However, such MIB will be available in future software releases.

Since all switches in a stack are managed as a single unit, there is nothing (no MIB) Orion can poll on an individual switch to indicate status.
