Adding location to the location field for servers

I ran a search and cant find anything to assist with this.

Under node details the location field is blank. I found a post that said to go into the DB and stop the perf mon service and edit it manually. After I add each location and start the service it reverts back to empty fields. I then tried to set "All Nodes - Tree (AJAX)" to filter by status and location all I get is unknowns. I set each community string by city which the server is located. When I try to set the fields to none then in Filter Nodes (SQL) set community or RW community it errors out with "

Bad filter 'community' specified. An expression of non-boolean type specified in a context where a condition is expected, near 'ORDER'. "

Any help to solve this would be great.

The "right" way to edit the location depends on the device type. For Windows machines, use the Services services snapin (or the Serivces node in Computer Management) -> properties of the SNMP Service -> Agent tab -> Location field. For Cisco (IOS) devices, set "snmp-server location XXX" in configure mode. Other devices have their own methods. There's no need to stop the NPM service - just change the Location field on the devices and wait a few minutes for Orion to notice the change.

If you don't want to go change this on all of your devices, you could create a custom property using the Custom Property Editor and fill that in manually. Again, no need to stop the NPM service.

The "Filter Nodes (SQL)" field won't help you with grouping nodes - it's just an advanced way to restrict the set of nodes displayed in the resource.

You can bypass Computer Manager by typing in "services.msc" as a Run... command or Command Prompt.

Additionally; Right Click on Services(Local} and enter the server to be edited. As above find SNMP and edit Agent/Location.

If you want to test this immediately. Restart SNMP (generally not required, but this is a test), and have Orion rediscover the node.
You will see the location field populated in the Node Details screen.
