Remote management of deployed machines

Hi all,

I am very new to this particular suite of products and so far I am very impressed. Mow I may be missing something very simple, But I am here to ask.

I am currently deploying over 1200 machines across a large area, Australia / New Zealand. I need to monitor these machines and the associated switching environment. I am deploying Windows Boxes and will on occasion need to reboot machines remotely. All of these machines are unmanned and support staff will not be at each location.

Question is,, is this a feature that is avaiable in Orion or Engineering toolsets. Or do I require a third part application to do this.

I know I can see everything in the remote machines after a correct setup but I really do need the ability to perform a boot command on these remote machines. it must be here but I just cannot find it. All help would be appreciated.

I have currently loaded the Orion 7.7 Evaluation version with the latest Engineering edition.

Not sure if this will solve your issue, but I see with the new 7.8 version that you can Remote Desktop to a monitored server... I tried it here, worked very well! Integrates right into your Orion web site...

You don't need Orion to setup remote reboots. Check out the link below. Psexec is used to remotely log into a windows machine and psshutdown can be used to setup for reboots on the remote machines. YOu can write a batch file that will run the psexec login to a remote machine from a workstation you are at then run the psshutdown command to reboot the server. You can use the windows task scheduler to schedule the reboots if you want...Hope this helps.

Do you want to reboot the machines manually or when a certain event happens??

Why not just use something like shutdown.exe which is built into 2K/XP??

If you want to trigger a reboot upon a certain event you could use a Solarwinds event to run the shutdown executable. You could pass the machines IP address using the inbuilt variables.

Need a little more info as to what you're trying to achieve in order to be of more help but anything is possible!

I am also looking to use orion to run a scheduled reboot remotely.

Trying to automate this so that if there was event that required a few servers to be rebooted out of hours after a scheduled task had completed, it could be easily setup.

scheduled windows task using psshutdown in a batch file seems to be the only way and manually editing it each time to include the servers you want to run it against each time.

It would be a nice feature to select a group of nodes (the same way as manage/unmanage) and given the option to perform a task (e.g. reboot) at set times.

Any thoughts?
