question - can 'windows live messenger' service be monitored?

is it possible to monitor the 'windows live messenger' service provided by msn.com?

i had several in-house users recently who lost this service among themselves because the internet service was actually down.

i'm new to solarwinds and didn't know which piece might could do this - orion - or maybe even apm...

i don't see a simple ICMP doing much good.

You can't do this with NPM; however, you can do it with Application Performance Monitor.

does anything in APM have to be included as a NODE first in NPM? how would I use a URL to MSN.COM for this solution?

I assume you mean to use HTTP as the App? but when I attempt this it prompts for ASSIGN NODE.

then the only choices are those MONITOR NODES in the Node List present from what is inside of NPM.

APM does require you to assign HTTP monitors to a node, but it doesn't matter which node.

You would need to create a node in NPM for "messenger.hotmail.com". Unfortunately this server does not respond to ICMP, so the node will always appear down. Then in APM you would create a Windows Live Messenger Application that monitors TCP port 1863 and assign this new application to the node you just created. I hope this helps.

I don't think you need to create hotmail node. You certainly can, but you could just assign your messenger monitor to any node. Requiring you to assign the HTTP monitor to a node is a sub-optimal quirk of our design.
