Interface Descriptions

Hi,

I have my interfaces on my Cisco Switches and routers in the following format eg:

<<Trunk Link to Switch A Int Gig 1/12>>

In orion system manager it picks up the decription of the interface correctly however on the web it only displays

Eg:

GigabitEthernet3/12 - <>

Any ideas, why this would be the case.

I can reproduce this if I name an interface in a similar fashion. I believe it is because of the way that the <> characters are parsed for the web. As you may or may not know <> are used to enclose HTML tags and that is probably why you are seeing that problem. If you choose another character (or remove the <<>>) then the problem should go away.

Thanks for the answer I didnt think of that. It will be a pain changing all the descriptions on the switches:-)

I was thinking that surely the application should be responsible for formatting any input correctly so as to avoid the potential of arbitary code being executed on the web pages.

Im not a web guru , but would it then be possible to insert some code in the interface description which could be run when the client views an interface for eg.

The application is responsible for the formatting. If SolarWinds so desires, they could fix the parsing of the interface descriptions to allow the <<>> you have. As it stands now, it does appear that you could use HTML code in your interface description that works on the page (i.e. "<B>Interface_Name</B>") will make the interface name bold.

That is correct. You can customize any Custom Property with HTML tags & it will be displayed correctly on the web page.
I believe this is by design, so that you can embed HTML objects & code in your Custom Properties.

You cannot edit SNMP discovered data directly in Custom Property Editor.
However, you can rename interface captions in system manager.
This might fix your problem.
