Collect Hardware Health using WMI

I have 4 Nodes in my environment using WMI as their Polling Method and that have seen Hardware Health collection data. These are Dell PowerEdge 2950 and R310 physical servers and are running Windows 2008 R2 (1 Standard and 3 Enterprise). I also have another 138 Nodes polling with WMI that do not see Hardware Health data.

Of those 138:

47 are Windows 2008 R2 but a mix of Physical (24) and Virtual Servers (23),
only one other is a Dell PowerEdge R310 which does not display "Hardware Health",
none are PowerEdge 2950
Other OS Counts:
- 39 are Hyper-V
- 3 Windows 2003
- 5 Windows 2012
- 25 Windows 2012 R2
- 1 Domain Controller
- 19 Unknown

I realize that "Hardware Health" needs to be selected under "List Resources" however for some Nodes, like the ones recognized as "Hyper-V", "Hardware Health does not come up as an option.

My goal is to get "Hardware Health" to display for all of the above. So what is the key here?

Is this a limitation of WMI on versions of Windows? Is it a hardware limitation?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If the machine is running OpenManage, then you should be able to access the OpenManage web interface via the URL https://{ipaddress}:1311/ replacing {ipaddress} with the IP address of the server running Dell OpenManage. From there you should be able to determine the version of OpenManage running on the server.

Hardware health only shows up for physical servers that are running their vendor's software agent such as Dell openmanage, etc. I'd double check that software on your servers who don't report hardware health and make sure its working.

Continuing with mesverrum's answer, I believe only HP, Dell and IBM are supported for server hardware health with WMI monitoring (therefore, running Windows). If you are an all-Dell shop, you have your answer in needing the OpenManage to provide the WMI exposure of the hardware health. Even then, I'm sad to say you will likely find that you are still missing Disk health status, as Dell has traditionally not exposed this through WMI. Folks here have tried different approaches to that. I have my few Dells trap up to me when they have a Disk problem and I alert on the trap (well, I forward an email - really wish we could get advanced alerting for the Trap listener...) If you have HP, you will need to ensure you have the WBEM Providers installation on your servers to allow the Hardware Health monitor to work on them.

The servers I am dealing with for this are all Dell so the info provided thus far has all been helpful.

However, we have some Windows 2008 Servers with Dell OpenManage that are getting the "Hardware Health" and others that are not. Also none of our Windows 2012 servers with OpenManage are collecting "Hardware Health". Is there anything else, like maybe configuration within OpenManage (I am not familiar with OpenMange myself) that might be causing us not to see the "Hardware Health" resource for the Node?

The simplest test is to try to access that server by https://serverip:1311

If you are able to get the website to load and can log into it then thats a fairly good indicator that solarwinds will be able to get the hardware health, if they don't load your openmanage software has some kind of issue and may need a service bounced or reinstalled or maybe your image has the wrong version or something along those lines.

So I tried your suggestion to some of the servers that are not displaying the "Hardware Health" and found some getting to the OpenManage login page and others not. We will look into the ones that are not.

Any other suggestion for the ones that are getting to the OpenManage page but aren't seeing the "Hardware Health" Resource?

Have you verified that the latest version of Dell OpenManage is installed on those servers which are not showing Hardware Health as an option under 'List Resources'?

I have found that disk drive monitoring use SAM w/ WMI and Dell's OME is not very reliable. But if you switch to SNMP it seems to work. Here is an Idea that I found when searching for previous Dell WMI/Hardware Health entries. And there are many threads to this:

Actually not looking for disk details at the moment but that is coming. Right now just looking to get the "Hardware Health" webpage Resource to populate for these servers showing disk state as well as states for fans, power supplies, temperature sensors, etc.

Have you looked at "manage hardware sensors" on the settings page? the sensors are controlled by this

Theres an enable and disable in there, in case someone has been turning them off!
