Howto increase web interface performance?

I use Orion 10 sp1 with web and poller on one server and SQL on a separate server. Neither server ever goes above 10% CPU, they both have 8+gb RAM and 2 4core CPUs. Solarwinds database is around 110gb and I have 1873 total elements configured.

When considering the CPU usage and the fact that the servers are at most 1 year old I feel I would get a faster web interface. Standard Netflow summary can take up to 40 seconds and if I load an interface details page in a seperate tab when my summary page is reloading I sometimes wait for up to 2 minutes before everything is loaded.

Is there something that can be done to increase Solarwinds utilization of the server?

I think we found our problem guys. During initial setup, they'd left the "thwack" community link switched on on the bottom of the summary pages and it was timing out trying to connect to this causing the extra delay. Taking that off has made things a bit speedier! Thanks

Have you upgraded to NTA 3.7? There are some significant performance enhancements specific to the web interface in that release that may resolve your issue.

Jeremy's right, Fredri. The Orion NTA product will help you determine any bandwidth hogs that could be eating up your network resources.

Yea, I run NTA 3.7 and it's already updated to the latest release and actually NTA is the slowest part of my whole Orion setup. More often I have to click several times to actually load the NTA summary page and sometimes it starts loading and stops after 30 seconds and goes back to the Orion summary.

The most common cause of slow web interface performance is poor database performance. Without knowing more about your environment such as whether your running Orion and the database on the same server or if your in a distributed configuration, or what the detailed hardware specs of the machine/s are it's hard to make a recommendation. Most common though is a an insufficient amount of RAM on the SQL server and poor RAID set and database layout choice on the SQL server.

Give us as much information possible about your Orion environment and we'll do our best to offer up recommendations that will improve the web interface performance.

Are servers physical or virtual ?

Agree with aLTeReGo on looking at DB performance when experiencing sluggish web.

By any chance are your orion web pages containing resources that might be more intensive ie: summary or network wide ?

As other shave mentioned, I would like to know what the specs are of your DB server? Are the logs and data seperated on different raid arrays? What types of disks and what are their speeds? Are there other databases on that same box? CPU utilization doesn't necessarily explain performance and neither does the age of the box itself.

Were running our database on a box with 2GB of RAM, 2x Dual-Core Procs, but the Database is on a 4-disk RAID arrray and OS/Logs on a Raid 1 mirror. All disks are 10K SAS. WIth 4300 elements, our performance is pretty good. However, were not running NTA.

What does perfmon say about disk queues on your db server? It revealed to me that on my db server the hard disk simply wasn't fast enough. The hd was the bottleneck, and I had no idea before I run perfmon.

Our responsiveness degraded as we loaded up the system, but has dramatically improved following a number of changes. We're now running >20k elements and >5k APM component tests across 7 VM engines over 3 sites. Our SQL was migrated to a separate physical server, it was moved from 32 bit to 64 bit, it was given its own local array of RAID10 drives instead of a RAID5 SAN. The NCM was quite CPU hungry so that was moved off to its own a dedicated server. We've added CPUs and memory as the installation grew, the SQL is 8-core 32GB, the primary polling engine is 4-core 6GB and the engines are 2-core 4GB. We run a separate dedicated web server and our DBA runs scheduled houskeeping from SQL.

Disk queues in SQL was one of our first problems, but was resolved by using fast drives, hardware RAID10 and a dedicated physical 64 bit SQL with 32GB. Our norm is now 0, but with very intermittant spikes to a few hundred. If your norm is in the hundreds you should to look at these queues first.

Do you have some DBA's that could take a look at database performance? Based on the setup you have, I would bet your disks are the bottleneck.

Hi there

I'd really like to see how you get on with this as we're experiencing similar issues on a brand new solarwinds deployment. The Netflow and IP SLA summary tabs take anywhere between 15-25 seconds to load where as all other pages seem near instant.

Our specs are as follows:

SolarWinds Orion NPM, Netflow, IPAM, IP SLA & Orion NCM is running on:-

Dual 2.4Ghz 4GB RAM Win2008R1 32 bit - ESX 4 VM

SolarWinds Orion Additional Polling Engine & SolarWinds EOC :-

Dual 2.4Ghz 4GB RAM Win2008R1 32 bit - ESX 4 VM

SQL Server for above :-

Dual 2.4Ghz 12GB RAM Win2008R2 64bit - 2 RAW Mapped LUN's to a 8x146GB RAID10 15k RPM Fibre Channel SAN (Disk queue length never goes above 1) - ESX 4 VM

I know recommendations state to have a physical SQL server, but as we've RAW mapped the LUN's through directly to the VM, surely this negates this issue?
