Network Performance Monitor (NPM)
Continuous monitoring
gacklin
I have been demoing the Solar Winds Engineers Edition for about 3 weeks now. I have noticed that it only seems to record data in the database while I have the monitor up and running on the machine when I close it out no data is recorded. I was wandering if it is possible for the software to run as a service and constantly record network data like bandwith utilization and such even though there is nothing up and running on the screen (i.e running as a service) so I can pull up reports at any time and view data for the previous week, month, etc.
I was also wandering if there was any way to monitor specific errors such as CRC errors through the software.

This is a toolset question...but I'll answer it here.
The toolset isn't really meant for a full-time gig. It is not possible to run it as a service because it's configured to work all-in-one. You should be able to minimize the tool to get it out of the way, but you cannot close it completely.
Specific errors, such as CRCs, runts, giants, etc, are all done in a Cisco proprietary MIB which is not supported by any other manufacturer that I know of. SW is generally standards compliant, so you don't get many manufacturer-specific bells and whistles.
