Is there any way to access a nodes status externally from another web site?

We have a local SharePoint web site that provides a dynamic map view of all our sites. I though it would be great if the graphic for each site was provided by Orion NPM so that it could reflect the current node status.

That way from inside SharePoint we could see if a site was operational or not.

I have been searching the manual but I can't see any way for an external web site to reference node status from the NPM server.

We are using NPM 12.01.

Does anyone know if this can be done?

Have you considered using the Orion Agent and running a SAM HTTP Component or deploying a WPM Player?

That's not really what I am trying to do.

We have NPM monitoring most sites and hardware and it's working fine for our IT team.

We also have other web sites that are exposed to all users. We were hoping to embed site status from Orion NPM into the other web sites.

For example, if I have a web site that displays a list of our sites, I want to link to the NPM status of those sites and render real time site status on non Orion web sites.

I'm not sure I am being clear about my objective. It's kind of hard to describe.

It seems like it's not possible. That's OK.

Hi Gary

using iframe you can display pretty much any view from SolarWinds on any other Web application (such as SolarWinds). There are different ways to do this, but one option is to get the URL from the widget that you want to display. For example, if you go to the oriondemo.solarwinds.com, there is a map on the main summary dashboard, if you click on the title of the map, it will open a new window with just the map. From there you can get the URL (http://oriondemo.solarwinds.com/Orion/DetachResource.aspx?viewkey=Enterprise+Dashboard+Narrow&ResourceID=8175&NetObject=… ) and integrate it in Sharepoint.

That's pretty close to what I was trying to achieve. I had hopped that I could extract individual nodes status and pace them wherever I liked but this sounds like it could work equally as well for my needs.

I will play around with it and see if I can make it do what I want.

If you want to get more elaborate with your other site you would probably want to be making calls to the API and then you can pull whatever data you want and present it in a way that might be more consistent with however you are currently displaying data in the external web tool.

The web service is at /Orion/Services/Information.asmx/Query

If you search that address on thwack you should see a few examples of people using it to feed external resources and javascript and such.

You will end up needing to get familiar with the API and SWQL queries, documented here

If you can provide your Sharepoint site with access to your SolarWinds SQL database, you could extract that information straight from the SolarWinds tables via a SQL query and display that in a Sharepoint webpart . (ie: Display business data on a SharePoint site)

Set up the following, and use URL like this: http://DOMAIN/Orion/Login.aspx?AccountID=DirectLink&Password=PASSWORD

Share views with non-Orion Web Console users

Any URL referring directly to a Orion Web Console page bypasses the login screen, logging the user into the DirectLink account. If the DirectLink account does not exist, users are directed to the login page.

The DirectLink account is created like any other account, and it can include custom views and account limitations.
If you embed a view in another website, you may need to either disable cross-frame (X-Frame) protection in your IIS configuration, or add the website to the X-Frame-Options header in IIS. SolarWinds enables cross-frame protection by default to decrease security risks. Consult microsoft.com for more information.

Log in to the Orion Web Console as an administrator.
Click Settings > All Settings in the menu bar.
In the User Accounts grouping, click Manage Accounts.
Click Add New Account.
Type DirectLink as the User Name.
Type a Password, confirm it, and click Next.
Edit DirectLink account options. See Define what users can access and do.
Click Submit.

Users can now look at views without an account on the Orion Web Console.

Another great idea.

I did already stumble on someone asking for the database schema.

It looked a little complex to me but as a last resort I am not above getting my hands dirty with SQL if I have to.

A node information and it's status, basic pedigree, custom properties, etc.. is all located in the dbo.nodes database view. Pretty easy to size the data and start from there. If you want an application status for a node or a custom poll value, you will have to make some joins in the table but it's not black magic when you already understand Orion and your modules data in the application at first and you have some time to invest.

So short answer: It all depends on the scope of your project and the level of detail you want to display
