Orion polling vs Whatsup Polling

All,
We've got just over 750 devices being monitored by Orion for statistics, and WhatsUp for status, each polling at the same interval (120 seconds). Every so often, we push a large data file to some of the sites, which saturates the link between us and them. When this happens, Orion see's the device as being unreachable, however WhatsUp doesn't blink. I had presumed that Orion's response time and packet loss graphs were being generated by simple ICMP polling, but now I'm thinking that Orion is doing "more" which our QoS is ignoring. Anyone have any thoughts?
