Alert on Drive Space for servers in a group

Hi,

I have a bunch of servers that are broked up into groups in SW (Not customized properties). I want to create an alert for all of the servers in a group to alert when drive capacity is at 95%. Do I have to create a complex rule to do this by first saying that I want to alert on Group name =XXX and then I want to alert on Volume? Or is their an easier way of doing this that I am missing?

There is not an easy way to do this, you have to create some complex triggers. How nice it would be to base alerts off groups.

"Give me all Criticals from McDonalds servers..."

A trigger should be that easy. But without a classful object framework, we have to define everything statically.

Wow! This is very hard to believe. What is the advantage to using groups then? I wanted to use groups because members can get assigned dynamically when new nodes are added and it would lessen the re-configuration when new nodes are added.

This is why I wish SolarWinds would look at how SCOM works and model a classful framework into their product.

The static management of custom properties for a large organization is horribly inadequate. And doesn't even work to do what you are wanting. With SCOM I can say give me all critical alerts for "X" group and be done with it. No out of control WMI performance alert SAM spam. No manual labor updating custom properties, triggers or alerts. No crazy SQL needed. Just give me all critical alerts for a group.

I took over a SolarWinds install for a large company recently and the previous guy had all of these psychotic disk alerts for just specific specific volumes that ran into the hundreds! Imagine managing that with a global team. With SCOM it's all done for me automatically. This is why you see threads here about people asking why new disks don't get auto discovered. Imagine how many people have missed alerts because a disk label changed or someone added a volume and didn't tell him about it. It frightens me that we live with this kind of acceptance for this premium tool. But, I am the only guy here it seems that recognizes these things and I am passionate about it because it's so important for all of us.

But, hey, I'm just some guy ranting so don't listen to me.

I am glad you recognize this deficiency. It feels good to not be alone. Did we just have a Taylor Swift like girl code moment? Lol.

People may see me here as the angry SCOM guy but there is a reason for it. SolarWinds is painful to manage in many aspects and many people are blind and do not want to admit to its many blaring deficiencies. With that said, I do hope they (product managers) can recognize that more automated management is needed. And a classful framework of object management and discovery is needed.

Oh, and a supoorted CPU alert that takes queue length into consideration.

NPM user here. I'm evaluating SAM for a large enterprise deployment. I had some issues with creating server group dashboards but finally got around it. Now, I am trying to build alerts and this is practically(if not) a deal-breaker.

I am sad and aghast.

Granular disk alerting is a challenge without trying all the hacks people produce. Out of the box it's not great for large shops that need to apply rules based on MB free or GB free. Alerting is solid for buckets of servers for % thresholds. Very solid. But lack of override at the MB level kills us.

Not a hater here, just a guy that wishes things were handled differently in NPM and SAM with granular customization.
