Orion Server migration with HA implementation

Hi All,

I'm migrating our Orion server to virtual server and Implementing HA (Single subnet) on this weekend with new hostname & IP address. I would like to clear few things before HA implementaiton.

I'm planning to use the existing Orion IP as Virtual IP in new Solarwinds server for HA. Currently DNS entry for this IP is pointing to the host name of existing Orion server hostname. I'll delete this DNS entry before I configure HA in new server. Do we need to add any DNS entry for the existing Orion IP for using as VIP in HA?

A quick response is very much appreciated.

Hi joshmohan,

If I understand rightfully what you are looking for, we have one reserved ip for SolarWinds Primary Poller, one reserved ip for SolarWinds HA Server plus one reserved ip for HA Pool that would be created for the same which in your case is VIP (you would decomm your old solarwinds server and use the same ip for your HA VIP is what i am assuming)

Its always better to have a static dns entry done for HA VIP (even though you don't it would work as HA VIP is always attached to the active solarwinds instance), ideally we wouldn't provide customers or clients with ip to access SolarWinds Web URL (rather than this -> https://X.X.X.X(IP)/orion we could provide a meaningful URL like https://networkmon/orion, make a static dns entry -> networkmon X.X.X.X(IP) )

A virtual hostname is not required in a same subnet HA deployment. It's completely optional. You can instead create a static DNS entry for the VIP if you prefer, or access the Orion web interface using the VIP itself if you'd rather enter the IP address into your browser to access the web interface.

Thanks for sharing the updates. I prefer to go with a static DNS entry for the VIP so that we can use the meaningful URL. My migration is planned on 1st June. I'll share my experience once i complete my migration as well as HA implementation.
