I just installed Solarwinds in my test environment. It came up once, didn't like my logon and has not come up again. I really don't know where to turn with this. All of the services are up.

I had a tech support ticket, but it was closed prematurely.

I restarted the service when this first happened (it was down) and it came back up. but I am not getting the opportunity to login.

Reopen the case, definitely, but Config Wizard is what breaks my site in exactly this way every time.

What do you see when you browse to the website for your installation? Does the browser just spin for a while and then time out, or does it pop up an error message like "404 - not found" or "500 Server Error"?

I doesn't do anything. No 404 or 500, just a blank screen. I did get to the logon screen once - it didn't like the default password and then I never saw it again.

It is like it doesn't want to start up at all.

OK, sometimes the website breaks because the URL that your web server expects doesn't match the URL that Solarwinds has concocted for itself. Try running the query below against your SolarWindsOrion database:

select ServerName, IPAddress, Port, SSLEnabled from dbo.Websites where type='primary'

Do the values match the URL that you're using? Specifically, check:

Is ServerName the same as the FQDN in the URL? Solarwinds often substitutes the short name of the Windows host after an update or reinstall, e.g. MYSERVER instead of myserver.mycompany.com .

Is IPAddress the one that the URL resolves to? If your server is listening on multiple addresses, make sure that IPAddress is the right one.

Is Port correct? Solarwinds often "corrects" this to 80 after an update or reinstall, even if your site is set up to use SSL on port 443.

Is SSLEnabled correct? If your web server is using SSL, make sure this is set to 1

How would I run that query? I am using the built in SQL.....

On your Solarwinds server, look for the SWQL Studio application. When you start it, you'll be prompted to connect to the Information Service. Plug in the server name, server type ( Orion (v3) works well), a user name and password. Try using the user name "admin" and the password you created (the one it didn't accept before). If you're able to log in, paste the query below into the upper right pane:

select ServerName, IPAddress, Port, SSLEnabled from Orion.Websites where type='primary'

Press F5 to execute the query. The query and the output should look like this:

If you can't log in with SWQL Studio, you'll need to use the Database Manager application. Start Database Manager and provide the server name and choose "Windows authentication". If you're logged in as the same user that installed Solarwinds, that should be sufficient to log you in. You'll see your Solarwinds database server listed on the left side of the window. Right-click on it and choose "New query...". Paste the query below (subtly different from the SWQL) into the query pane and press F5:

select ServerName, IPAddress, Port, SSLEnabled from dbo.Websites where type='primary'

The output should be similar to the picture above.

When you run the Config Wizard, have you set your USER ACCESS CONTROL slider to the bottom and ran "as administrator".

Control Panel > User Accounts > User Accounts > User Access Control Settings > slide bar to the bottom.
