NPM now more difficult and slower to use

I admit I'm not the most current in my upgrades. I ran 9.1 until I upgraded to 10 about a month ago. The problem is...

WHY CAN'T I USE NPM TO MANAGE MY INTERFACES!?!

I'm now forced to use the clunky, slow... SLOW... did I mention slow...........

web interface.

Why do you have to "improve" applications and make them worse?

Please return functionality to NPM.

See this post here as I assume you are talking about System Manager.

Bigger question is why is your web console slow? One quick item to check, do you have real-time virus scanning enabled on your Orion server? If yes, this will slow the web console down, exclude the inetpub directory from real time scanning

I think the reason it's slow is because it's not instant. When I have to wait half a second, I'm pissed. There's no need for it. The application is faster than a web page, period.

IMO a well designed app is always better than a well designed web page.

But I'm still reading through your link. Thanks for the quick response!

Fair enough and point taken, but a couple counter points in looking at the bigger picture.

You are sitting at home, just had a nice dinner and you get a page/email to manage a new interface your Asia team just turned online. So you boot up your laptop, VPN in, Remote Desktop to the Orion server, open System Manager and add the new interface

Or you open your laptop, VPN in, log onto the web console and manage the new interface or even another path, grab your iPhone or Android device which has VPN, hit the web console and manage that new interface.

Even though the page took half a second to load, you saved maybe 15-30 seconds by not having to go through all the extra steps of RDP'ing etc.

Also say you gave your team in Asia right to the Orion server to manage interfaces, so they have to RDP into the Orion server across the WAN which will be a lot slower than hitting a web page in the bigger picture.

Ok, let's look at how this works/worked. I want to change the "Collect Statictis Every..." interval.

In Orion 9.1 NPM...

1) Right click interface and select "Interface Details"

2) Move slider to appropriate setting

3) Close details window and select next device

In Orion 10 web interface... (I'm showing step 0 because in NPM, for me, this is always open in the background, no need to do it. It's arguably an extra step)

0) Select Admin, then Node Management, then the hierachy for displaying interfaces

1) Click the interface you want to change

2) Click Edit Interface

3) Change appropriate settings

4a) Either go back to step 0, which means clicking through admin, mgmt, and interface selection...

4b) or click, back, then back again, and THEN find out your hierachy is no longer displayed.

5) click '+' to navigate hierachy and select next device

Depending on what you have already open, I count between 2 and 5 extra steps/clicks to do this via a web page than the old way.

When I'm going through all my devices and checking/changing settings, that's an impact that I do not appreciate.

The way this SHOULD work, is kind of like iTunes. I should be able to select multiple interfaces at once and change a setting in ALL of them by making one change. If this were still an Application driven function, I'd make a feature request. But I don't see the point since it's moved to the web.

In your web page, click "Admin", click "Manage Nodes", in the "Show" drop menu, select "Interfaces". In the box next to that drop menu, type in the node name that has a bunch of interfaces you want to change and click "Search". Go through the resulting list of interfaces, select the ones you want to change, and now you can "Edit Properties", unmanage, delete, etc, to all of them. At once.

I complained about the web interface over the thick client at first, too. Once you get used to doing it differently, you may find you like it more. YMMV.

You also make a good point Brandon. I guess it's the old dog syndrome.

I don't disagree with the benefits of the web. I disagree with the choice you've been forced into of it being either/or. Best solution is full application development WITH web control.

When forced into one or the other, I choose the application. I understand (and even agree with) the desire for a web front end. I disagree with your choice.

And I'll probably post these little aggravations occasionally.
