OID - Custom Pollers and webpage intergration - 15-01-2009 - 12:31 GMT +2

Hi all

Sorry if this is a double post on the subject but I am not really sure what I am looking for due to a lack of experience on my side when it comes to MIB's, OID's and custom pollers.

I will tell you what I aim to achieve with my NPM and then hopefully you can steer me in the right direction.

Our financial department wants to do a stock take of all the devices in the field and they have it in their heads that NPM could be used to assist them, with which I fully agree. I don't however agree with them on the statement that NPM would by default pull the Cisco Catalyst 2950 chassis serial number from the device. (that is only one type of device, we have a couple of Colubris AP's and Gateways too as well as some Power Man manageable UPS's)

Now I would like to know how to do the following:

* How do I know which OID to use from the MIB database that is in Solarwinds? (This way I won't need to come ask you again for which OID I am looking for, Cisco, Colubris or otherwise)

* How would I add that custom property to be polled by NPM

* How would I be able to add that custom property to the Node Details section on the Node Details view? (Node Details section is where the IOS, IP, Description, etc information resides)

Well, the short answer is to go to this link and look for the 12 minute video on using the Universal Device Poller (UnDP). It is a good introduction to the basics.

It should answer most of your questions. Also, if you go the to the Content Exchange section of Thwack, you will be able to download the custom poler for Cisco chassis serial number. You will then need to import it using the UnDP.

As for the other devices you mentioned, you can use the SNMP tools from the Engineer's Toolset (get an eval copy if you don't have it yet). Then, if the devices in question are SNMP enabled, you can view the actual MIB on ther device and search for the OID that you need. If the OID is not already in the Orion MIB database, you will need to find it thru a Google search or by contacting the vendor. Then you would just need to create a poller using the UnDP.

I know this probably does not answer all your questions, but the UnDP is really pretty user-friendly. Let me know if you have any more questions.
