Problem installing SolarWinds Orion NPM
alvarezp
Hello, I'm currently Evaluating Orion NPM. I just downloaded from the site.
I prefer to follow the docs first and *then* to experiment, so I chose MSDE 2000.
So far, I have installed MSDE 2000 and Orion NPM.
However, I'm stuck at the Configuration Wizard:
1. I could login to SQL Server. I logged in using NT Integrated Security. SQL Server name is "OCTAL\SWORION". Everything is fine.
2. Under "Create/Connect to Database", I'm selecting "NetPerfMon" as a Database, and "C:\ORIONDB" as the place for the database files.
On clicking "Continue ->" I get the following error:
-----------------
The target directory does not exist!
Please select an existing directory.
Extra SQL Error Information
[SQL-MDO]
-----------------
However, the directory already exists. -- I noticed that "NetPerfMon.ldf" and "NetPerfMon.mdf" actually *were* created, but the Configuration Wizard doesn't let me go past that screen.
So I click on "Continue ->" again to see what happens, and I get:
-----------------
The target directory does not exist!
Please select an existing directory
Extra SQL Error Information
[SQL-DMO][Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Database 'NetPerfMon' already exists.
-----------------
Googling, documentation and forums have not been useful so far.
Any ideas on what am I doing wrong?
Thank you very much.
Octavio.

Octavio,
The steps below should resolve this issue. If they don't give us a call at 918-307-8100 and ask for support.
This indicates that the sqldmo.dll file did not register properly. To register sqldmo.dll, first locate the sqldmo.dll file which will be located in either the Program Files\Solarwinds\Network Performance Monitor V7 directory or the Program Files\SolarWinds\Common\SQLDMO9 directory.
For Windows 2003, perform the steps below:
1. Right-click on the file.
2. Select "Open With".
3. Select "Open With" again.
4. Select the program from a list.
5. Click OK.
6. Click the browse button.
7. Browse to WINDOWS->system32.
8. Select the regsvr32.exe file.
9. Click the Open button.
10. Click OK.
11. Click OK on the successfully succeeded window.
12. Run through the Configuration Wizard.
For Windows 2000, perform the steps below:
1. Right-click on the file.
2. Select "Open With".
3. Select Choose Program.
4. Click the Other button.
5. Browse to WINNT->system32.
6. Select the regsvr32.exe file.
7. Click the Open button.
8. Click OK.
9. Click OK on the successfully succeeded window.
10. Run through the Configuration Wizard.

EricM:
I tought I had already done that, looks like I didn't. Anyway, it works now. Thanks.
My operating system is Windows XP Pro. I wonder why didn't it register in the first place.
I found your solution easier to implement from the Command Shell:
C:\>dir sqldmo*.dll /s /b /a
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn\SQLDMO.dll
C:\Program Files\SolarWinds\Common\SQLDMO9\SQLDMO.DLL
(I used the second one)
C:\>cd "C:\Program Files\SolarWinds\Common\SQLDMO9"
C:\Program Files\SolarWinds\Common\SQLDMO9>regsvr32 SQLDMO.DLL
I got a message about the DLL registration: successful.
I had to remove the previously (partially) created database as the failed steps left some trash in the database.
C:\>osql -E -S localhost\INSTANCE-NAME
1> DROP DATABASE NetPerfMon
2> go
