SQL on seperate server

What we are in the process of doing is moving the sql database off the orion server and onto it's on server.
Both server have dual gig cards in, is it possible to connect a card from each server directly and have Orion transfer the data across this connection rather than out over the network, particularly as both server are ajacent to each other in the cab?
Thanks

Hi Jon,
Just a thought: won't two Windows hosts with no routing turned on select the best path to a host if they have multiple NICs? If you have the database defined on the Orion server as 10.10.10.1 and the Orion server has the two NICs configured like so:
20.20.20.10 - CORP network (polling and such)
10.10.10.10 - Orion super database high speed network
Then the Orion server should send all of its data traffic to the database server over the 'private' link.
If you set this up and get it working, let me know. We have a similar situation (although the servers are in adjacent cabs).
Be fantastic.

You just need a crossover cable (cat5e/cat6 for GB) then configure any IP address within the same subnet on the card in each server. You'll then need to reference the SQL server as that IP addres rather than the hostname.
However, I should think if you plug both GB cards into the same switch, that will be fast enough for the two to communicate.

yeah....if you rely on Windows for correct default routing, you're rolling the dice. I've seen it guess wrong. Phil's suggestion about putting the cards on the same subnet & using a crossover cable is great, as long as you use a subnet unique to that connection. The clincher would be accessing the SQL server by IP so there's no doubt as to which interface the Orion server needs to use to connect to the SQL server.

Got this working with a cross over cable and it works a treat.

The only problem is that now I've tried to install and configure Orion when I tell Orion config the IP address and select the folder for the database it tells me that the folder does not exist even though I've selected from the browse box.
Is this due to the use of the ip address as the sql server or something else?
Thanks

I am also running SQL on another server but there is a problem. If Orion loses the connection to the SQL DB the application stops all activity until the connection is restored. BIG PROBLEM. I use notepage to call my cellphone when there is an alert and I monitor the SQL server too along with everything else, but when the connection is broken, no call. This is a big problem for me, so if anyone has an idea to fix it then please let me know. Otherwise, I will have to move the SQL DB back to Orion's server.
