Is it possible to monitor a web application beyond just checking to see if the web server service is running? Specifically I'm thinking of performing an HTTP GET request to a url and comparing the result to a 'mask' result. i.e. a status page that returns 'I'm Alive' when it is alive and anything else would mean that something is not working right....

Yes it's possible using "Big Brother".
I use it to monitor HTTP on my Orion server - it does an HTTP get every 5 minutes & alerts me if there is no response.
