Orion Software architecture

Question

I'm in the process of picking a network monitoring tool and my boss has asked me to provide him with the software architecture for each tool.  I'm trying to get Orion software architecture.  Can somebody please help me with this?  I'm leaning on going with Orion. Thanks.

Also some of the stuff that we'll be monitoring will not be IP/SNMP based. We are planning on writing some software to interface in-between the hardware and Orion so that Orion thinks it is IP/SNMP based. Anyone ever done anything like that? It's for military legacy machines.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by architecture, but from a structural standpoint, Orion has three functional components. The application itself polls (using ICMP) and collects statistics (using SNMP) from monitored nodes, interfaces and volumes on a network. Orion has a pretty extensive and comprehensive MIB database that enables it to work with a large variety of hardware platforms. This collected information is written to a Microsoft SQL database, where a web server can utilize the data for presentation in a very customizable web console.

Physically, these three "layers" can be housed on one server, or can scale to three or more servers, depending on the size of the network and the types of data to be collected.
