Beginner's Question

Hi All,

I'm currently evaluation versions of Orion and the many add-ons available.  I'm trying to configure this to our environment so that when a server needs attention, Orion can execute a task to resolve the issue (and then notify us when the task fails to restore order).

Is this done in NPM or APM?  For instance, I'm looking for a way to perform a web GET and I don't see it in NPM.  However, I see the option in APM, but no option to execute a task.  We originally tried IPMonitor, but it had a few components that we really needed and I really liked the configuration ease with IPMonitor, yet I am not seeing this with Orion.  Help!

You use APM's HTTP Monitor to set up a recurring test of a web site.  The alert engine is shared by both NPM and APM.  If you want to get alerted if any application goes down, you need only one line, "Alert me in an application is down".  No need ot mention the node.  If you want to restrict the alert to certain nodes, then you can add that line.  We've got a great video on how the Alert Engine works, which you might find useful.In general, we have lots of tutorials that can be of help for a new user. www.solarwinds.com/.../tutorials.aspx

Okay, so I think I got a handle on this and want to make sure.  In APM, I create an app builder to be able to check say the WWW service running on a server.  I then use NPM to setup an alert to take an action if the app needs attention.

So when setting up the app, it had me add the nodes.  Now, when I'm building an alert, it also has me add the nodes.  My question is, does the app and the alert need the node?  Or do I only need to set it up on app builder and the nodes are inherited into the alerts?
