Report Writer Sumarization

I'm trying to get a handle on writing my own reports but I seem to get erratic results. When I'm trying to get a months' worth of data in a day by day table (one row per day), I get a single row, averaging out the month. I THINK it's because I'm not sure what the summarization is doing. Can anyone explain the summarization feature for me so I can maybe figure out what I'm doing wrong?

Set the report time frame to last 30 days & set the summarization to "date".
