Running System Manager on remote poller

I ran into a problem a couple of years back where I kept getting a security related error message when trying to run System Manager on a server other than the one to which I had my TS connection. Now, I've run into the same problem with a new Orion install, and I can't recall how I fixed it before. Has anyone run into this? Attached is a screenshot of the error message.

I have an open case (24319), but so far it hasn't made it very far. The account I'm using to login to the server is a member of a group that has admin rights on all of our Orion servers, so I don't really know where else to look. I don't see any failures in the server log either. (scratching head)...

Anyone have any ideas?

Anyone else experiencing this problem?... Anyone at all?...

SW support recommended implementing the changes noted in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909444, but this doesn't seem to work for us.

OK... Guess I'm the only one.

Support said this is a Microsoft security thing, and that there's not really much they can do. Can't say I completely agree with that, but it looks like it probably won't go any further than that. If anyone else runs into this and finds the right security switch to throw (without blowing everything up), please let me know. It's much nicer, and less administratively taxing, to be able to manage the entire Orion application from a single server, rather than hopping around to multiple servers.

Since System Manager was originally built some time ago, Microsoft did lock down some of the protocols that it uses so that it's no longer remote-able. Although inconvenient (like many security practices), it's still the right thing to do. I assure you that there's no magic switch that'll make this work. If there were, we'd be happy to give it to you. It gives us no pleasure to withhold features.

The good news--we're not going to leave you in the lurch. We are going to add node management to the web console. Admins will be able to add, delete, and edit nodes from the web, and that editing will happen at the database. Each of the pollers will be tweaked overhauled to take their cues from the database, which means that you can make most changes from the web without regard to which poller is involved. The only poller-specific settings that will remain are global settings.

And although I won't give you a date, this isn't some theoretical off-in-the-distant-future dream--we're actively working on it. You'll need a little patience, but not a lot.

Yeah, we ran into this with 7.8.5 on Win2K and were able to get it working, but it doesn't seem to be happening with 8.5.1 on Win2003. I knew you had plans to webify this function in the future, but I wasn't sure how far out it was. The thing that worries me is that it may not appear until a release where native ASP code is no longer supported. We have some major dependencies on ASP based applications that we've written for inventory tracking and site info, as well as some others, and so far we have been able to get all of them working with 8.5.1, but it will take a significant effort to port them to ASP.NET.

I understand your position with regard to ASP.NET, but it can be painful for those of us who have taken advantage of the intgration capabilities of Orion, and built our support model and processes around the simplicity of ASP. Oh well... Things change...
