Automated backups failing

I have a multi-homed server(one network connection on the production network, one on a unrouted gigE network for backup) Backups will work for a while and then all of a sudden we can no longer connect to it. No other NT/2000 servers that we backup acts this way.
Has anyone here heard of this before or are aware of a fix for it? The product we are using to backup this server is a UNIX based version of HP Data Protector 5.0. Orion runs an HP Data Protector client 5.0.
