alerts using windows net message

I currently have Netperfmon sending alerts to a tech using the windows message feature which works perfectly as long as the Orion server and the technician's pc reside on the same subnetwork. This is not such a great idea however as it means I have to put this Tech's PC on the management sunet, something we do not wish to do.

Is there a way to enable my netperfmon box to be able to send a netmessage to a workstation on a different subnetwork?

Can I suggest using the IP address of the machine as the detination? If you are using the machine name you will need a WINS server. This is not an Orion/Solarwinds issue, but a windows issue.

I have 90 analysts monitoring from offsite, with alerts being generated via net send
e.g net send 203.8.189.147 BE-159-145 is Down

also as an alternative, you may wish to use syslog and generate message to analysts

Thanks for the advice. I realize this is a Windows "feature" and not a SolarWinds problem. I recall having tried using IP when Set these alert actions up in the first place without success. I will have to take another look at our access lists. Perhaps I am blocking something.

If your Orion server is part of your AD domain, then you can just enter the users login ID & it will send the alert to the first machine they log into.

If you are running Windows XP with Service Pack 2 then you will need to go Start > Run > services.msc and open messenger and enable the service.

This service was considered a security flaw in Microsoft Programming, But to me it is a pain in the ass that they disabled it.
