Polling Question

I am new to Orion and I want to make sure I deploy it right. When I add a device and set the polling time lets say 5min. Does this mean that if an interface or node goes down it will not detect it possibly for 5 minutes? If that is the case what is the recommended polling time.

Or should I send snmp messages to the Orion server and create alerts based off those?

What is best practices?

you are correct in that assumption.

The poll time is how often Orion will send to the device to see if it is up.

The Statistics is how often Orion will ask for detailed information.

All of these are accessable from the settings button when you launch system manager under the polling and statictics tabs.

So how often should I poll? With the possibility of me not knowing if a node or interface is down for minutes I am thinking I should set polling to 30seconds. Is 30 ok? to long? to short? I know it depends on my enviroment but what is everyone else doing. All said and done I will have around 50-75 nodes and about 2000-3000 interfaces.

I would suggest one minute for polling and 2 or 3 minutes on statistics and 15 min for Volumes

You also need to consider the impact that changing your polling and stats collection intervals will have on your Solarwinds polling server and the growth rate of your database.

As you increase the rate at which your polling engine must collect data, the workload on the CPU and memory will necessarily increase. Keep an eye on your CPU load and memory useage as one indicator of how well your hardware ius keeping up. Two other things you can look at: In System Manager, go to Polling Status on the File menu. The ICMP and SNMP polling indices should be at or very near 100%, which indicates that the polling engine is able to complete polling cycles. If needed, you can access the Polling Engine Tuning app from the Advanced Features menu. Using this will tell you if you need to increase or decrease the number of polls per second to be able to consistently and completely poll and collect stats on your network.

I hope this was not too much, but I thought it was important to factor these things in to the equation.
