x64 support?

We are building new remote pollers and wanted to know if they supported Windows 2003 x64? Anyone running this?

Well we went ahead and built x64 anyhow except since it works with x32 it would be fine....we'll as expected Solarwinds has issues with x64 and won't fix it anytime soon. We have wasted over a week building these. It installs fines and everything looks great except some services will not start. NPM will start fine but that's about it.

It's seems like a lame excuse that they can't fix these issues. x64 has been out for awhile and should have been tested before V8 was released.

Not happy with SW at the moment.

We realize that x64 has been out a while, and we are going to support it as soon as possible. Unfortunately, Orion is a lot older than x64 and some of its code presents challenges that will require non-trivial amount of re-write to fix. We have this work scheduled for 2007, and as of that release, we will support x64.

The sad thing is, there were things that worked on x64 in V7 that do not work in V8. I ran v7 on x64 from the day I got it, and only had problems with the SNMP Trap add-on. With V8, the main application runs, but I can not get any of the other services to run, and I am no longer even able to modify which interfaces are being monitored on a node. Every time I try the Orion System Manager crashes.

Right. It kind of worked on 7.8.5, even without official support. Since we weren't testing against that OS, we didn't know it broke.

We hope to ship a minor release that deliver support for 64-bit Windows this spring.

We expect to have a 64-bit compatible version available this Spring. Until then, we have a suggestion:

1. Leave your database on the 64-bit OS since there's no compatibility problem there.

2. Download free, 64-bit compatible versions of either VMware or MS Virtual Server.

3. Set up a 32-bit version of Windows on the virtual machine.

4. Install Orion 8 on the 32-bit virtual machine

While this is not an ideal solution, it would allow you to keep your existing server set up without additional cost. This solution would be temporary until 8.1 ships.

Another solution--a variation of the VM soultion--would be to move the Orion server to a spare 32-bit box (if you have one) temporarily.

You can migrate to a different box simply by calling Support and asking them to move your license.

When 8.1 ships, move back.

Regarding Orion version 8.1:

As an add-on module, I'm assuming that the new Windows Event Log forwarder will support x64 OSs as well as x64 versions of .NET?

Currently, either the x64 OS, or the x64 .NET do not allow installation of the event log forwarder on such a machine.

Since Orion v9 requires dot net 3.5 during install, could someone please come up with an event log forwarder that doesnt require dot net 1.0.

There is no dot net 1 support on x64 server and this has been a real pain trying to get event logs from SQL, Exchange, and basically all the heavy db servers running x64.

Loading the current event log forwarder prompts for dot net 1 (x32 version) to be installed. If you go ahead and install it, you break Exchange 2007, specifically OWA on the CAS servers.
