Poll For New or Changed Resources

We poll a group of Windows machines accross a private wan. I want to know if there is a new hard disk or network card installed. Under list node resouces, I monitor just about everything there is to monitor on these devices. If a hard disk goes missing, I can see this quick - there will be a flashing grey box over the node's green dot. However, the only way I seem to be able to determine if somthing is added is to edit the node and 'list resources' again.

Is there an automated solution?

I think is a very good question. It could be used on the route/switch side as well for new interfaces added (vlan, port-channel, serial, etc.)

This would be great for cisco 4500/6500 switches. If I card is added/removed you are alerted.

So we all agree it's a good idea..... how can we do it? Maybe a custom SNMP poller? But what would the reporting/alerting look like?

So would your expectation be that this occurs in near real-time based or would a scheduled job which delivered a report be sufficient. For example, job runs nightly and when you come in and check email in the morning there is a report of adds and deletes?

Both I supose... I should be able to see that a node's status changed from the solarwinds home screen - the flashing grey dot. And/Or I would run a report nightly or on demand that shows me the changed nodes. I think that the check has to be part of the regular polling process.... maybe we can do this, or part of this, we existing custom poller support.

This is actually a feature we have been wanting...since we bought Orion. Automatic discovery of network changes, node additions and removals, etc...on a scheduled basis. A scan at midnight and a report would be sufficient.
