I am looking for an explanation or diagram on how all of the tools within the orion toolset tie together.
i.e How each element shold be used and how it ties into the other products.
Is there such a thing?
Thanks
Paul
Is there a specific use case or set of use cases you are curious about? Are you looking for a high level description or info?
Hi,
This is the scenario:
I work for a Medium / Large corporate.
We currently have a large network, server & storage estate that is currently "monitored" with a multitude of tools.
To give you an idea of the kind of scale we are talking about here. Networks look after around 6500 devices and the server team look after around 1500 - 2500 servers comprising of VMWARE, Hyper-V and physical servers. We also have a storage estate of around 2.5 - 3 peta bytes which is a combination of HP EVA and Netapp.
We are looking to consolidate our monitoring tools onot a more suitable platform. If that means networks run one platform and servers/storage another that isn't to much of an issue but it would be useful.
Currently we are using Microsofts SCOM platform and the server team would like to keep this hence looking at solarwinds.
What I would be after is at a high level overview how the various tools plugin to each other and what the dependancies are i.e NTA & IPSLA are dependant on NPM being installed on the same server.
I believe NCM can be installed on it's own database and polling engine server.
Thanks again.
Gotcha.
Currently, NPM is the base product and APM, IPAM, IPSLA Manager and NTA are modules on top of NPM. So as you said NPM is required to run them. NCM can run as a standalone product with it's own server, but has a Orion Web Console plugin to where NCM can appear in the general Orion web portal. It also has a stand alone website you can use as well, your choice.
Storage Profiler, which will monitor your storage devices also runs standalone. It currently does not have a native integration to the Orion web console, but see here as to what we are working on.
Depending on the level of depth you want to monitor into your VMWare setups, we do some basic VMWare monitoring in NPM. We also have Virtual Profiler which does much more in depth.
I covered a lot in a short description above, so I am sure you have a ton more questions. Have you chatted with any of our SE's yet or just looking around right now? I am the Product Manager for Orion NPM, if you would like to chat more offline with me, let me know and I will be more than happy to assist.
