Network Performance Monitor (NPM)
Linux and Solarwinds
iceman
We have a few servers running Linux on Dell Hardware.
We use NET-SNMP.
Are there any issues monitoring CPU? Solarwinds gets a reading but it seems to be static.
It never moves up or down.

hi iceman,
Take a look here:
http://www2.solarwinds.net/SolarWinds-Forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=214&SearchTerms=net-snmp
This is the most complete thread on enabling monitoring of Sun/Unix/Linux boxes through net-snmp.
I hope this helps.
Be fantastic.

We have another monitoring product called Hybodus and it reads the Linux CPU with no issues.
This is a serious issue with Solarwinds.

Additional information:
We are running Net SNMP 5.09, which is the recommended version by Solarwnds support.
Below I've listed Linux information.
2.4.21-20.ELsmp is the Linux Kernel version
Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS release 3 (Taroon Update 3)
I'm hoping someone within this forum is running Linux and monitoring CPU and can profile a stable configuration to use with Orion.
Thanks

Thanks Issac.
Do you happen monitor Linux Servers with Orion?
If yes --- What version of NET-SNMP are you using?
If I had to guess it almost appears Orion asks for CPU% once and never again.

Hi iceman,
We are monitoring several IBM AIX servers and a Solaris box but no Linux. The higher ups can't fathom using a product that's 'free' (so much for the value of an MBA).
The AIX boxes had NET-SNMP configured right out of the box. The Solaris box was setup by the goon who maintains the box. I don't have access to it and have no idea how he set it up.
In both cases the CPU, disk utilization, and memory are all reporting properly.
If you would like the AIX NET-SNMP configs I will go bug our DBAs and have them send me a copy.
Be fantastic.

Ha --- Thanks Issac.
One of our Admins did some research on MIB issue. It appears Solarwinds does not use hrProcessorLoad and relies on the ssCpuIdle counter.
Unfortunately the ssCpuIdle counter is deprecated and does not work in Linux (and not recommended at all with net-snmp),
From net-snmp.org (

I sent this information to Solarwinds Support, but I have doubts anything will be done.
Right now we're using a product called Hybodus, it seems to have developers that care about Linux.
Will keep you posted.
