Is it possible to trigger events from SNMP Traps

We have configured our UPS's using the Universal Device Poller and have a trap sent when the input power source changes (mains power, no input power or generator power are the 3 potential sources).

This works well so that we can look at NPM and see the current input power source, however I would like to configure an event when that source changes so that over a given period of time we can look and see how often the input source has changed, i.e. how often over the last month has the UPS kicked in because of a failure in mains power.

Using trap viewer, I can trigger an alert, and what I would like the alert to do is simply log an event so that when I look at the UPS in the web interface, the events would show, but I don't seem to be able to do that.

Is this do-able? We are using NPM 10.1.3

Using Advanced Alert manager application,this should be achievable.

In the "trigger condition" tab,there is an option "Custom SQL Alert" available as a drop down for the field Type of Property to Monitor.By selecting this option you must able to key in the SQL query according to your requirement.

And then moving to the "Trigger Actions" tab,you should find "Log the Alert to the NetPerfMon Event Log" option under add new action.This will start entering the events to the NPM events list.

And then you can log into the GUI and pull up the UPS node page.And there under the event summary you should look for the "Alert Triggered"option.This should help you to see the details you are looking for.One step further ,you can select "export to pdf" available on the top right hand corner of the page.

Thanks for the reply. I've had a bit of a play with what you've suggested, and while interesting and perhaps useful for something else I am trying to do (!), it doesn't look like it is going to help me here. The "Custom SQL Alert" option does not seem to be custom enough to let me query the Traps table - I only have a limited number of "SELECT" options to choose from.

What I don't understand is why, from the trap viewer, I can create alerts with actions, much as I can from the alert manager, but do not have the option for one of those actions to be "Log the Trap to the NetPerfMon Log".

This is an unusual type of condition ot be looking for, as power blips can last less than a second, so even if I set my polling interval to 1 sec (which I don't really want to do) I could miss one if using polling alone, however a trap will always be sent, which is why I want to respond to the trap.

I do have a support contract in place so I might go and ask the support group the best way to tackle this issue as I have a feeling I am not understanding something in how alerts, events and traps work..
