NPM | vCenter vs ESXi monitoring and WMI support?

I've been on hold for 30+ minutes so I hung up and will try these community forums. Even the ticket response was useless from Solarwinds support.

So --

1) If I add my VMware environment, is it best to add vCenter, or the ESXi hosts, or both?

2) If I add my VMware environment to monitor my VMs, does it use WMI for VM insight or would I have to add each VM as a Windows node for WMI support?

3) If I choose to add each Windows node separately, and I want to monitor my ESXi hosts for failure, will it create duplicate entries for systems (one node for WMI added Windows node and one node for a VM?)

If it doesn't give me WMI support I'll probably add each system as a Windows node.

I wish support was worth something. I can't believe we paid for this product.

I add vcenter first then the ESX hosts... Also you'll have to add any VM's you really want to manage as well if you want to be able to click on a vm and see the machines stats. You will see a lot of information though right after adding the vcenter... since orion speaks the vmware api it can get most everything this way!

I add ESXI in server show all hosts.

Hi codpet , sorry you weren't able to get through! I can help you with some of those questions:

1) Definitely add the vCenters. Hosts are optional, you can add a couple and see if you get value from it.

2) Monitoring VMs is just like monitoring any other node in NPM - you would have to add them.

3) No - we recognize it as a VM node and move it under the host, but it still gets monitored as a regular node.

Thanks! I think you're right. I added vCenter and it shows up as vCenter but it doesn't list the VMs or hosts. I'm okay with that.

I can slowly add each VM by hand. I don't really want to monitor every little thing for each VM. So I'll take my time and add all 200-300 VMs. I'd like to deselect certain drives, etc.

So that's it; add vCenter, add hosts, and add each VM.
