VBscript action not running

Hi,

I have a vbscript that we need to run whenever we detect a link failure on our WAN router. I am able to run this vbscript without any problem from the desktop (manually). However, this script does not run when triggered as part of an alert action. I have tried the test option for this alert as well but the log for this actions displays that the action was completed successfully, where in actuality it didnt run at all!

I have opened a case with solarwinds support but they have not been able to help much. I have made sure that the administrator account is configured to run the alerting engine service and I am also able to run the script manually using this administrator account. Is there any way I can log what is stopping the script from running?

Any suggestion/advice would be much appreciated.

I had a problem with job scheduling in an environment where the windows domain accounts were very restricted. I had to ensure the user was allowed to "run as batch" or something along those lines. run "secpol.msc" -> under Local Policies -> security options -- If I remember correctly and look through.

@njoylif: I am using the local administrator account to run this script and it runs fine when run manually. Only the advanced alert manager is unable to execute the action.

Does your script provide some UI element? AlertService runs without desktop interaction so your script will be blocked in case it uses some.

Is your OS 64b or 32b?

I would try:

- create trigger action run external program.

- use: c:\Windows\system32\cscript.exe "path\yourScript.vbs" > c:\log.txt

this will redirect whole output from execution into file, so you can find some useful inforamtion.

We are running windows server 2008 R2 64 bit. This script is written such that it would open a web browser window and log in to a network device's GUI and change some config. Can you please elaborate on why the alert service will block this script from running?

I don't think that AlertEngine won't start or block VBS. It's done by system self ( there's something called session 0 isolation). I assume that this VBS just fail or it's blocked. Try enable on AlertEngine service "Allow service to interact with Desktop"

Have you tried my suggestion? What's in logfile?

Hi ET, the script runs just fine from the command line and therefore, the log option wont be helpful. I have also tried the 'interact with desktop' option but alerting engine is not able to run the script.
