1 minute polling

Has anyone tuned their Orion server to poll everything at 1 minute intervals? I've been asked if we could do the same. I understand the the strain on the polling server but wanted to see if anyone elase is doing this.

If needed we could buy a beefer box or additonal pollers if needed.

You would also need to consider the network load created and processor performance on each device that this will create.

I have 1 minute polling just for all internet servers in my network. it is enought to get realtime alert when there are problems. Thereis not overhead if you think that a server is equiped with a 1000/100mbs ethernet but serve client over a less than 10mbs internet link.

A few things to consider;

- The biggest load on the server/network is the SNMP polling of all the interfaces on a switch/router. Keep this down to a reasonable timeframe & you should be OK.
ICMP polling should not add that much load to the poller.

- However the DB will suffer if you decide to do this.
Make sure your detailed stats are rolled up into hourly stats fairly soon.
You don't want to be keeping this much data around for too long.

- ICMP is considered low priority in the Network world.
It will be the first thing to get dropped when the network/routers/switches/server, etc. get busy processing real traffic.
You might want to consider using Cisco IP SLA instead, if you are going to poll at this frequency.

Keep in mind that the default internal stats polling on a Cisco device is set to 300 seconds, so this will not give you any extra info in most cases.

Bryan,

First, I assume you are asking about the "status" poll every minute.
I have this set to 45 seconds for our Datacenter switches and routers; about 30 devices.

Secondly, I have my statistics polling set for every 5 minutes, default for most vendors internal statistics.

Finally, If you are really looking for faster notification of events, sysloging all your devices to a single syslog server, Orion for example, is a much better way of gleaning information from your network equipment as to its overall health.

I wanted to bring this back up. I turned up "staistics" polling of a couple key devices to 1 minute. However the reports can only go down to 5 minutes. How can I see the 1 minute data?

Try to change the SampleSize=1M and see what happens. When I do this i see the point by point collection of my data. Just remember the poller has a random effect to collect data within the time frame and the chart console puts data down exactly at the interval selected, so you chart may have gaps.
Collections: 0:00:00, 0:00:58, 0:01:45, 0:02:55, etc.
Graph points: 0:00:00, 0:01:00, 0:02:00, etc
