Information for Work Experience Student

Hello,

Can anyone help?

We are taking work experience students (only for 1 week) and I thought it would be great to expose them to Solarwinds Orion NPM & SAM (the two products that we use).

Can anyone point me to Solarwinds material that would be suitable for a student in terms of what is does, what it's capable of etc.

Also I seem to remember when partaking in a live lab that there was a link to a practice area for Solarwinds, would anyone happen to know what the link is?

I want the student to create and alert and get a good understanding of Orion NPM & SAM and provide them with activities similar to the real world, however my manager is slightly nervous about giving them too much access.

Let them loose on oriondemo.solarwinds.com - They will be able to see the whole toolset in working condition, look at pre-created alerts, reports. They will have restricted functionality when it comes to administration.

In terms of alert creation, why not let them set up an alert on your production system, as long as it only emails them (or the person supervising them) it shouldn't cause any issues. Just make them aware of the importance of naming the alert correctly so other users know what it is.

As for training material, there is a boatload on YouTube on the SolarWinds channel - solarwindsinc - YouTube or you could give them access to the SolarWinds Customer Portal to look at the Training Environment and look at some of the on-demand videos there, but they are a little bit more product specific rather than a broad understanding of the toolset in general.

Thanks so much David, that is really helpful; just what I was looking for. Want to get a balance of not overloading them and making it interesting, so the mix of the demo site, videos and creating an alert on our production system seems like the right approach.

Yeah, it's a big product and if they are only with you for a week, you don't want to overload them but give them a basic understanding of what SolarWinds is doing and why it's important to your business.
