website times out

I just upgraded to 8.5 and tollset 9.1 This is a pretty vanilla installation all the default setting for Orion etc. It has been working well for almost 2 years. After the upgrade when I tried to login to the website I got the following list of errors. Tried rebooting with no success. System manager appears to be working properly so I think this is just some kind of website problem, but I don't know where to look to fix it. Any help would be appreciated.

Does your password have any special characters in it such as # ? or &? There's a known problem with special characters in passwords with the 8.5 website. We should have a fix for it soon, but in the meantime you can workaround the problem by using alphanumeric passwords.

My website has been working - though slowly - since upgrade to 8.5 (with hotfixes). All of a sudden I got this timeout. I have no special characters in name/password. Have tried to restart IIS web site. Restarting NPM does not work. How difficult is it to reverse the changes made going to 8.5? I really find this painful!!
