Solarwinds running on VMWare instances

Hi guy's,

New to Thwack.

I'm just wondering if any of you have experience in running Solarwinds on VMWare instances? I have had some feedback but nothing concrete as yet. I'm not sure if this is directly supported or even recommended but my options are limited. Is performance affected - or anything else for that matter?

If you look at the bottom of this page, we do support running Orion on VMWare. I will let others in the community chime in on their experiences, but typically we don't recommend running SQL on a VM.

We currently have two VMWare instances both run NPM and APM one also runs NCM and EOC. There's around 7000 elements on each of the NPM instances. Up to now we haven't had any issues.

SQL runs on two separate 4 core 8 gig 2008 servers.

We have NPM, APM, NCM, NTA and IPAM running on a single W2k8R2 VM with 4 GB mem. Disk is 6 disk 15K RAID 5 LUN shared with other vm's. We have around ~1000 elements, ~150 nodes, ~400 interfaces and ~200 volumes.

We also have a virtualized SQL Server 2008 on W2k8R2 with 6 GB mem. Disk is 6 disk 15K RAID 1 LUN shared with 1 other vm. It hosts all the Orion databases plus 5 other databases (BigFix (3) and Virtualcenter (2)).

Web on a VM works great of course, a poller so long as you give it enough resources is also fine (but I choose not to do it except for 1) and SQL I would really never put on a VM.

We have 2 pollers on physical HW, and one on VM. Our webservers (2) are also running WM, like is the FoE´s,

The SQL server is acctually running VM, even i hate it. Our DBA and backend department like it this way, and even we´ve had some issues in the past, they have all been resolved. I tell them how to enjoy my network, and they tell me how to enjoy their servers

I THINK that having the SQL on a physical box with sufficient metrics, we could push our pollers even harder, gaining max value for money (not having to invest in additional pollers to often) Our environment is polling 17000+ elements on 2000+ nodes

Besides the physical servers running as pollers, one is running NCM and NTA etc

Details of the SAN and servers i don´t have, but can get it if you need.

Apologies for late response - its been a crazy year so our upgrade was put on hold.

Thanks to all for your response - was a great help.

We have finally moved to VMWare - 3 instances in fact, 2 on 1 physical machine and 1 on another physical machine. We have 1 instance hosting the SQL database, 1 instance hosting the NPM and 1 instance as an additional poller. The additional poller will eventually take most of the polling away from the NPM. At present, our numbers are small (just under 2000 nodes) but will increase dramatically. I also have a lot of custom pollers added (it's a requirement) but performance is very good so far. All VMWare's have 12 Gb memory running on 2.53GHz CPU.
