Is it normal to have a polling status between 97-98%? I've never seen it above or below that range.

You want it to be in the 99% range. This may indicate that your poller is over taxed. Open Admin->poller stats and look to see how many outstanding polls (stats and icmp) you have.
I think the poller will basically hang if SNMP outstanding reaches 900. try to get it below 300 to 500 I guess?
