MapMaker Icons

I am trying to use some of the icons from Cisco that are .vss or .ptt, no luck. Does anyone know how to convert some of the icons into .ico. Thanks!

You need to use a decent icon editor; Icon Workshop is good but it isn't free.

The easiest way we have found to use Visio icons is .....

Bring up Visio and place the icon on a diagram. Select the icon and then Edit->Copy from the menu.

Then switch the Map Maker, open a Map and select "Edit->Paste Special".
Select "Paste the Image from the clipboard as a new object" and give it a name for the new Icon.

This creates a new graphic object within Map Maker you can then use on any map. When selecting a graphic, a new folder now exists called "Imported". This contains all the graphic objects you pasted via "Paste Special".

This method is preferred over converting them to ICO files. If you use the Copy/Paste Special method, the Visio icon maintains its ability to be viewed at any size without the pixelization that ICOs have.

You can copy graphics from any application is this manner. Just remember to select the individual object before copying to the clipboard. If you select the entire drawing from Visio, then select Edit->Copy. You will get the entire drawing as a graphic in Map Maker.

This is a great suggestion that I would like to use, but it appears that Visio must be installed on the server where Mapmaker is installed. I have Visio, but installed on my desktop, not the server where Orion is installed.

Do you have any suggestions?

I know for a fact that Visio isnt on either of my servers.

For gif and jpg images copy-past special worked for me trought terminal server. Hope this can help

You can share your local clipboard with your server by using ClipBook.

- Just run clipbrd from Run... command in the start menu.
- Paste the local clipboard into a clipbook. Give a name and select "share now".
- Run clipbrd on your server and connect to your client.
- Paste the remote clipbook into your servers clipboard.

The services ClipBook, Network DDE and Network DDE DSDM must be set to manual start and started before you can use the ClipBook.

I have not tested this with Visio and MapMaker. Just to give you an idea.

You can import graphics using Paste special from ANY drawing program, not just Visio. I simply copy-paste graphics designed in Xara or Photoshop and it works flawlessly.

...any ideas as to make the icons refelct node/interface/volume status?

I mean, I have done it manually but it is a painstakingly cumbersome process of creating the four differently coloured but otherwise identical icons, renaming them, moving them to the webserver and so forth.

Not the most vital of features to have, but it would be great to make this process easier.

Another "nicity" would be having the links between nodes assume more colours than one for "Up" and another one for "Not up". Yellow for warning, or shades of yellow/orange/red for different utilization levels.

1. Copy your icon from the drawing program
2. Paste special... onto the map. Must enter a name.
3. Once pasted, right-click on it, Object properties
4. Choose network object
5. Choose object style. I find "Yield signs" to be very useful.

I know what you mean, but what I was trying to find a way to make simpler was how to create the four custom icons (one for Unknown, Up, Down and Warning each) without having to create them all one by one...

What I have found is that if you create an Icon, make sure the fill is 100% transparent then you can use the Tri-Color property to fill the object based on status.

Becareful not to set the entire object to transparent.

I have tried several ways of creating these icons. I can actually create them but they are very hard to click on once they are in the imported items folder. They just show a little square box and the name underneath it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What are the size of your icons? I believe something like this happened when the icon was too big/wide to display properly.
