Network Atlas Down Status Icons

I recently made custom icons for our Network Atlas maps but I am unsure if I can configure it:

I have Red,Green and Black router icons and instead of having the appearance set to a overlay or a background status color I would like to have the actual router change colors from green to red if it is down?

We don't edit a graphic to show status, so that won't work. I use the 3D disk choice for router icons.
