excel worksheet to display in solarwinds?

Hi, I'm new to Solarwinds. One of the bosses in the company wanted to know if it was possible to create a page in solarwinds where we could put the names of our contacts and their phone numbers, email addresses, etc.

Now we have this information in an excel file, and I was wondering if we could probably create a link in our solarwinds home page or in any page for that matter and display this data?

I tried to customize the page and add a miscellaneous> custom page but it's only displaying like a notepad type of box.

Ok, I think I have a solution for you and I just tested it myslef so it should work.

Open your Excel spreadsheet and then save it as a web page. Open the web page file with your browser and then view the page source; copy that into a Custom HTML resource in Orion.

Now you should have it!

Do you want this data on a per node basis or just one big sheet?

If you want it on a per node basis you can create a custom node properties for contact information. You could then have a summary report that shows all contacts with their information.

Another alternative if you don't want to store this data on a per node basis is to use a custom HTML resource and build a page that has all of the information you want in a table.

No it doesn't need to be on a per node basis. Just one sheet with the data.

Come to think of it, I'm not even sure why he wants to put it in Solarwinds in the first place. But since we use this tool 24x7 then maybe he just wants to be able to pull the data off quickly.

I don't have a single clue on how to build an html page, will there be any simple way to do this?

the simple way is the custom html byrona described. you would need someone who knows a little html to help you or use something like selfhtml

if your browser supports it you can also try to make a shortcut/link to an excel file which will open in a browser window or in excel.

that works, thanks. another way i was able to do it was to put it as a jpeg file and then put it in the maps folder, and load it as a map. boss doesn't care if it shows up as a map heading anyway. and it doesn't need to be editable.

my only issue now is that the file we have has too many columns to display correctly in the home page. so it's cut..

is there a way to make it a user link / so that it displays on another screen inside solarwinds? so it can have a screen by itself.

ok finally finished this. it's quite lengthy but here's how i did it:

1. logged on to the server and went to network atlas. made a new map using background image. pasted an image of the excel file

2. In solarwinds went to settings - manage views. Add new, type is summary

3. In column one, added a map (network maps - map).

4. Edited map for 1 column, width 1800 (we had many columns in the excel file). This is so it doesn't display as cut.

5. Hit preview. It will display a blank map. Click edit on this page, and load the map that was made in network atlas..

6. Copy the link displayed here. Submit all changes.

7. Create a user link, name it and paste the link used in the preview

Now in our home page, there is a section for user links. I click that, then there is another link inside for the excel. That displays the data.
