RedHat Enterprise 4 SNMP Problem
bleearg13
Hi all,
Has anyone else experience a problem with RHE4 and/or Fedora Core 3 when polling with Orion? I know this is an SNMP problem, not necessarily an Orion problem, but I'm wondering if anyone else has seen it. I found this on the net-snmp project:
sourceforge.net/.../index.php
Basically, after starting net-snmp, if you poll with Orion (and only Orion - snmpwalk works fine until the end of time) after a few minutes, the SNMP process hangs. Since this is only happening with Orion, can the developers throw out an idea as to why this happens?

I ran into the same issues. Basically the newer versions of Redhat come with a newer version of Net-SNMP which is the cause of this. Orion is doing something that the newer versions of Net-SNMP does not like causing Net-SNMP to go into a RACE condition. I found that you need to Downgrade Net-SNMP to a version more friendly with Orion (version 5.0.9) comes to mind. Then again, I wish the SW team would do some research to find out WHY this is happening. Alot of network admins dont want to have to go thru the pains of downgrading a package that comes shipped with an OS platform.

My understanding is that the problem is because Orion is calling depreciated resounces in net-snmp. resources that have been depreciated for a long time and Orion hasn't switched to the new ones. As I understand it these resources where listed as being depreciated before orion even started using them. If I"m wrong I'd love to hear somone from Orion speak up on this.

Now this is some 7 months after the original post. We have recently installed RHE4 and get the same sympton. We are runnign the latest version of Orion 7.8.202.
Is there anyway to get around this without down-grading net-snmp

We solved it by actually upgrading to the latest version of net-snmp. The included version in RHEL4 is actually a bit dated.
