Are there any specific requirements for a virtual environment (ESXi)?
I seem to have an app server that struggles at times and I am looking for a recommendation of what people are running out there with what modules.
Do you mean for your primary poller? Additional poller?
I'm probably over-provisioning, but my primary poller is 1 socket, 4 cores @ 2.3 GHz, 24 GB of RAM, and a 80 GB system disk. The additional pollers are 4 sockets, 4 cores @ 2.6 GHz, 24 GB of RAM, and a 80 GB system disk.
Can you provide the spec of your VM? CPUs, Memory and disk sizes/numbers.
What products do you have installed (including non SolarWinds applications)?
How many elements are you polling? Go to your <Server Name>/Orion/Admin/Details/Engines.aspx page and review the element count and polling rates.
Have you had a look at the install guides?
SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor requirements - SolarWinds Worldwide, LLC. Help and Support
We run on entirely VM Orion system here, for our primary Orion system(s), the Additional Pollers, Additional Web Servers and all of our databases.
We monitor over 1,800 devices, with NPM, SAM, NTA, NCM, VIM and SRM and we just add resources to the systems as required.
Our primary Orion server currently runs 8 virtual processors, 16 GB memory and has 5 disks (one ach for OS, dedicated Pagefile, Web, Logs and Programs) all presented from a SSD 3Par array.
Our Orion database has 6 vCPUs and 24Gb RAM and a lot of SSD disks (of another 3Par array).
I hope it helps!
I wish I could get by with 24 GB of RAM on my database server! Expanding to more pollers meant more resources there as well... bumped it to the recommended 128 GB and it'll get close to using all of it if I let it. Not even at full capacity so far and I'm at ~11k elements, 7k interfaces, and 2k volumes. Lots and lots of alerts to go along with all that, too. We found at 10k elements we were getting tapped out when SolarWinds said 12k per poller should be the max, so that was when the first APE got added.
We have one poller and one DB server.
The specs on that DB server are:
Xeon E5-4620 v2 @ 2.60 - 4 sockets x 8 cores and HT (Host)
4 sockets 1 CPU
32GB RAM
Windows 2012 R2
Pure Storage Array
Polling Server:
16GB RAM
traditional SAS storage

We recently migrated out NPM and SQL server to Azure. What disk storage configuration did you use for your database server?
