Downgrade to v8.1

Hey all, I decided to download v8.5 and install. Then I read the part about it not supporting SQL 2000 - and of course got an error when running the Config Wizard... "SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE) is not supported". I am also running Orion on a Win XP Pro server. Then I figured I should download SQL Server Express 2005 SP2 from the Downloads area and install it. Well now I can not get the Orion Config Wizard to connect to the new SQL server (I'm not even sure if that's set up right) - I don't know SQL very well and the old Orion versions pretty much set up the server for me.

Does anyone have tips on setting this up right with the current config? I did backup my database before doing the v8.5 install. If I can't make this work on XP can I download v8.1 somewhere and reinstall it and restore my database?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Currently I have no monitoring and need my a$$ covered. Thanks in advance.

Orion 8.5 definitely does support SQL Server 2000. We do not, however, support MSDE 2000. Instead, you can use SQL Server 2005 Express, which is free, just like MSDE.

Although Orion will mostly work on Windows XP, it is not officially supported on that OS. XP is a desktop OS, and Orion is server product.

You might be having problems with the name of the SQL Express instance. When the config wizard asks you for the database, type this:

(local)\sqlexpress

That should work.

Orion typically fills that in for you, but there are some circumstances where it doesn't. We are trying to fix those instances.

Don't know how big your database is, but don't forget the 4GB database size limitation if you should decide to try using SQL 2005 Express.
