SQL Licensing for Solarwinds\Orion Volume Licensing and Select Agreements

Commments please on Licensing Orion Server Dedicated SQL Server.

My DBA advises we need a SQL license per core. We will be having 2 dedicated SQL Servers. Each with 16 cores. That is 88K for SQL Licensing. This appears very steep. Any suggestions. DBA team advises that Single Server CALs cannot be used. Any advice please

I've assumed you're considering SQL Standard Server for Orion requirement.

SQL Standard Server is licensed either as 'Server + CAL' or 'Per Processor Core' model [minimum 4 core required].

How many users are going to use the Orion Platform? If you can quantify that number of users, you could consider server + CAL model and that shouldn't be 'as expensive'.

With answer to following questions one could improve upon the licensing aspect of SQL for Orion Deployment.

Why are you running on 2 Dedicated SQL Server for Orion. Is it for scalability or is that meant for fail-over / DR?
Do you need to run SQL on all 16 core of the physical server? Would you consider a Virtual Setup with lesser cores associated to the VM?
Would you consider an MSP delivered service [hosted on premise] for the Orion Application alone? Do explore this further.. there are interesting options available.
