Custom property included in alert email

I will be at Orion training next week so I'm sure that I will learn how to do this then, but I'd like to know before that if anyone can help.

I would like to add a custom property to each node called Support Link that contains a web link - the link will be different for each node. I then want to set up an alert that sends me that link when the node goes down. We already have the node down alert running that sends out the node name and status, so I just need to know how to add the link from that nodes Support Link field to the email.

This is something that is covered in the Orion training offered by Corona Technical Services (don't know if that is the training you will be attending).

You can use the Custom Property Editor to create a Memo type property called Support_Link. In the blank for each node, paste in the link to the Node Details page for the node.

Now, in the alert you can embed the SQL variable in the email body and/or subject. Do this by opening the advanced alert and clicking on the Trigger Action tab. Select the email option and on the Message tab of the Edit Action window, insert (or use the Insert Variable button) to embed the "${Support_Link}" variable. If you use the Insert Variable button, the variable is in the Node category list.

Now when the email comes through, you will be able to click on the link and the Node Details page will open. One note though, you will probably need to also include a login and password in the link so the user can log in to the Orion server to retrieve the web page.

A little more specific information.... Unless the end user happens to already be logged into the Orion server, they can only get the Node Details page displayed if login information is embedded in the link that they click on. (Unless you want the user to have to login to see the information)

To do that, append the following on the end of the link:

AccountID=XXXXX&Password=YYYYYY

where, XXXX is the username and YYYY is the password of an Orion web user account.

Try that and let me know if you have any problems.

Thank you, thank you! I was hoping that the custom property would be available as a variable in the email response! I have set this up on one of the interfaces that routinely goes down and am waiting for that to happen.

For the record, the link in Support_Link goes to a sharepoint page which explains to the on-call technician what exactly he/she needs to do when this interface goes down. So I may need to use the account information in the 2nd part of your solution, although I'm wondering if it will work the same since our sharepoint site accounts are AD accounts.

Two different ways to get what you want:

First to put a custom property into a email message, use a SQL Statement i.e. ${SQL:Select "Your Custom Property" from Nodes WHERE NodeID='${NodeID}'}

Second to put a link into a message,

http://Your_Server/NetPerfMon/View.asp?View=NodeDetails&NetObject=N:${NodeID}

You can also direct link to any resource, like volume details,

http://Your_Server/NetPerfMon/View.asp?View=VolumeDetails&NetObject=V:${VolumeID}
