Unable to open OrionReportWriter.exe

Thanks for the peek. ANY and ALL feedback is very appreciated.

OS: wind2k12r2

NPM ver: 12.0.5300.0

OrionreportWriter.exe ver: (file version) 2016.1.0.0

For some reason, Orion Report Writer does not open. Nothing is displayed and the orionreportwriter.exe process never runs (per task manager). Reports seem to work normally via the web console. The only clue is a windows application event log generates the following messages

first this one:

Source .NET Runtime

EventID: 1026

Level: Error

Application: OrionReportWriter.exe

Framework Version: v4.0.30319

Description: The process was terminated due to an unhandled exception.

Exception Info: exception code c0000005, exception address 08A4A868

then followed by:

Source Application Error

EventID: 1000

Level: Error

Faulting application name: OrionReportWriter.exe, version 2016.1.0.0

exception code: 0xc0000005 (and other system related information)

Does anyone have any insight on this?

In the end of the day, I've confirmed that the EMET 5.5 product/ruleset was in fact causing the issue with OrionReportWriter.exe 32 bit executable. I modified the GPO policy Computer Configuration->Administrative Templates->windows Components->EMET->Application Configuration and added a line for value OrionReportWriter.exe value string -SEHP -DEP -MandatoryASLR->NullPage -BottomUpASLR -HeapSpray -EAF -LoadLib -MemProt -Caller -SimExecFlow -StackPivot . I am not determining exactly which negated option it was.

Hope this helps somebody as this blew my mind and sad that EMET doesn't appear to log anywhere

Try a repair install on the .NET framework?

If you still have problems you can uninstall, reboot, reinstall, try report writer again maybe?

I will attempt a repair on .NET and report results here. when you mention uninstall approach, do you mean .NET? is there a individual report writer installation that you know of? I already tried a repair on orion core services with no luck.

Yeah, there should most likely be something listed under add/remove programs, the actual .NET framework. If a repair doesn't fix it, the reinstall might. What you posted sounds like a .NET problem rather than a SolarWInds problem.

I'm biased however as I just finished a project that required a specific version of .NET to be installed and there was a lot of playing with that.

thanks MBird...oddly enough .net does not appear in the programs control panel...do you find this odd? so I ran the .net4.x repair utility and sure enough it tells me that 4.5.2 is installed ...but where?

...dunno any thoughts?

another clue is that I can actually get the app to throw an error if I disable the nic...comes back with can't connect to backend db solarwindsorion...still a bit puzzled on this dot net thing...not showing in the control panel..maybe I'll simply install it (4.5 I guess)...thanks fro all your assistance thus far and please reply when you can
