ESX Virtual Machines (mostly) show as Physical

Orion 9.1 SP2

I'm monitornig my ESX 3.5 servers and ,as seperate nodes, the virtual machines running on them.

Orion correctly show which vm's are running on which ESX hosts however if you look at the details of the vm's it reports all but one of them as physical machines (see attached).

Anyone else seen this behaviour? Perhaps know a fix?

I finally got round to opening a support ticket. They had the answer within 3 minutes !

The NIC in the VM has to be monitored (i.e. selected in 'List Reources') for Orion to be able to detect that the system is a virtual machine.

I had a policy of NOT monitoring the VM NIC. That policy is now reversed...

Is the title of that node view following this format: `Node Details - "Node Name" - Virtual Machine hosted by "ESX Node Name"` ?

Or do you only see this title format: `Node Details - "Node Name"`

I'm seeing 'Node Details - "Node Name"' for all but the one system that has been corectly identified as a vm. In that case it show as `Node Details - "Node Name" - Virtual Machine hosted by "ESX Node Name"`

You should open a support ticket so that a tech will be able to check the logs and the database entries for that node.

Once it will be solved, please post the solution here. Of course if someone lorking around that thread has a solution, he/she should post his comments, ideas meanwhile :-)

To generate the diagnostics once you received the case number by email:

Open the Solarwinds folder. In a default installation, this will be located in c:/Program Files
Run the executable called SolarwindsDiagnostics.exe
This will create a zip file of the results - it will contains logs, events, and some information regarding the database etc.
Reply to the mail with that zip file attached

If the zip file size is above 5MB, You can use LeapFile to send the file:

Go to http://solarwinds.leapfile.com and click “Secure Upload”
Enter support@solarwinds.net as the “Receiver Email” (Note: it's solarwinds.NET for this)
Fill out the form and attach the files to upload.
Once its been uploaded, just reply to the email to let the tech know it's up there - we do not get a notification in our personal mailboxes -.

We just upgraded this past weekend from 8.5.1 to 9.1 SP4 and our nodes show as 'Node Details - "Node Name" - Virtual Machine, host unknown". What is causing this?

I upgraded to 9.1 SP4 (from SP3) yesterday and its fine.

Just a guess: are you monitoring the ESX hosts? I imagine Orion would have to know about them before it can state what vm is running on them (?)

If it's ESXi then the host doesn't support SNMP polls (only traps) and Orion doesn't know what the host is.
