Riddle me this - When is an admin not an admin ?

The answer? After I upgraded to 9.5 yesterday! ;-)

I was pretty worried about upgrading from 9.1 SP5 to 9.5 SP5. It was a bit tricky with a SQL double upgrade because you can't go straight to SQL 2008; you have to go to SQL 2005 and THEN 2008. We had a database permissions issue that stumped us on SQL 2005 but the 9.5 upgrade was far enough along that we were able to move the database to the SQL 2008 server in the middle of the upgrade, which solved the problem (For some reason, Configuration Wizard was insisting it needed to delete the SQL admin account on the SQL server...and couldn't do it. Kind of hard to delete the account you're using to manage the account in the first place).

That problem went away when we moved the database to the SQL 2008 server, but...I don't have permission to manage my nodes anymore even though I'm an admin on the server and an admin in Orion. When I run Orion System Manager on the server (I prefer it to using web management) and look at node details, everything is greyed out. Any ideas on how to fix this?

What happens when you go to web node management?

My understanding is that they moved the majority of node management to the web interface and it can no longer be done in the Orion System Manager. As you noted, everything is greyed out. When I click the "Manage Node" button in the system manager, it opens a web browser.

If it isn't supposed to be this way, then I am noticing the exact same thing as you. However, I am able to fully manage node in the WUI with an account that has Admin privs.

To begin with, I got an error that the account didn't have the administrator role. I use a server administrator account to log into the server that doesn't have rights in Orion. So, I gave that account Admin rights in Orion. That didn't solve the problem with everything greyed out in System Manager but, now that you ask, I notice that resolved the problem with the Web Console when I launch it from the server. Thanks!

Any idea why everything is greyed out in System Manager? NPM was upgraded ysterday from 9.1 SP5 to 9.5 SP5. I'm not running IPAM so that gives me the equivalent of 9.5 SP4, I believe. The backend was also upgraded from Sql 2000 (to SQL 2005) to SQL 2008. I figure there's an unchecked box somewhere in 9.5 that I don't know anything about. ;-)

Other than this little issue, I've been EXTREMELY pleased with the upgrade, so far!

Huh....well that would be annoying, Warbird. I've been using System Manager for about 8 years now and I'm pretty conmfortable with it. But, with my new servers, the web interface is so fast I guess I should just quit bitching and get familiar with the new interface! :-)

The Web Management works fine, once you know how to use it. But, it's not as fast or versatile as the system console. So, is this the way NPM is going to be from now on, you can only ADD devices from System Manager but can't make changes? I'd certainly prefer to be able to use BOTH.

I agree. Being able to use both is very desirable. Why was it necessary to disallow editing from the System Console?

Having it in both places was causing a fair bit of instability. System Manager is going to be removed entirely as we move forward, so that's why we eliminated it rather than spend considerable effort to try and make them work together. System Manager is some of the oldest code, and it limits us from doing a variety of things that customers have been asking for.

Can you give me specific examples of where it's less versatile? What do you want the web to do that it can't? I don't ask to be defensive: We want to give you what you need, so every example we can get is something we can add to the web console.
