incorrect memory utilisation on cisco switch

Hi,

On our cisco edge switches (cisco 2950's) solarwinds is reporting them as between 80%-100% memory used but when I click on the graph it shows as total memory 3.75MB?

A show mem summary command from the switch shows

Head Total(b) Used(b) Free(b)

Processor 80C7AEC0 3932480 3932160 320

but a show ver shows that there is 20MB memory on the switch

cisco WS-C2950G-48-EI (RC32300) processor (revision K0) with 19958K bytes of memory.

Is there a way to get the stat to take into account total memory or does it just read the memory used compared to the memory allocated in this case 3.75MB.

Did you get a response to this? I'm getting the same thing for a 6509 with SUP32's.

I've also seen this one - I have a pair of Cisco 7400 routers showing exactly the same symptoms - although many other of my 7400 routers show normal/expected values...

I think it's probably related to the Cisco OS version issue since the routers with the incorrect memory utilisation are running the same OS but the other working ones are running an older OS.
- The 7400s with incorrect memory utils are running 12.4(1)
- The 7400s with correct memory utils are running 12.2(21) or older...

I've just ignored it for now since I know those two are wrong - but would be nice to get that fixed

I'm running the modular IOS on a pair of SUP32's. Not sure if that helps or not.

We have the same issue with a 6509. Showing 95% mem usage.

I am wondering a possible conflict in a MIB?

This issue was correctly identified and fixed in version 9.1 of Orion NPM. Thanks to those customers who provided us with the details to help properly fix this problem.

Hi.. I just installed the new version 9.1 and still have the problem =( with my 6504 switches...

in the SQL, nodes table.. shows:

7.549694E+07 = TotalMemory <-- This is wrong .. it should be 512,000,000 and not just 72,000,000

4.288405E+07 = MemoryUsed

57 = PercentMemory

----

Several nodes shows the same "number 7.549694E+07" or something similar, but wrong finally.

Is there a patch for this?

I already tried: Shutting down the services.. modify the DB with the correct value.. start again everything.. same result.

Also: Deleting the Node.. re-adding.. same result.. =(

Hi, If you have the MIB walk tool, could you get the information from these OIDs?

1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.48.1.1.1.5 ciscoMemoryPoolUsed
1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.48.1.1.1.6 ciscoMemoryPoolFree
1.3.6.1.4.1.9.2.1.8 ciscoFreeMem
1.3.6.1.4.1.9.3.6.6 ciscoProcessorRAM

We total up the ciscoMemoryPoolUsed and ciscoMemoryPoolFree for our Total Memory and the ciscoMemoryPoolUsed for the used memory. These items typically return a lot of entries for the different types of memory in a Cisco device. If your cisco is properly reporting data from these items, then you need to open a support ticket.

Some older IOS versions do not support the newer OIDs.

You're right!.. it's a cisco Bug ... I checked those 4 OID's and they sum in total: 75 ..( it should be 512),

so I tried another IOS and voila!.. it's working now Thanks

The bug is already documented in bugtoolkit as CSCea28478
