Move SQL Server 2000 MSDE Database to 2005 Express

Hey All, I wrote a while ago about upgrading to Orion 8.5 but needing to upgrade SQL Server 2000 MSDE (on XP Pro) to SQL 2005. I now have a new server that has Windows Server 2003 on it. I installed the SQL Server Express that Solarwinds has for download but I am really not sure where to go from there. I'm not sure how to get my database from my old server (2000 MSDE) to this new one (2005 Express). I installed SQL 2005 Express with the default options as I am not an SQL guru.

Once I get the SQL stuff worked out I'm sure I can handle the Orion installation. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Okay, here's an update. I followed the steps provided in that tutorial. Things did not work out the way they did there - I actually tried both ways including the detach/attach method but as he says if they are not "compatible" it won't work.

Anyway, I tried a couple different variations of the first way (using Microsoft SQL Tools) with similar results each time. I even tried installing SQL Server 2005 Standard, then Orion 8.1, and then migrating the database - thought I try to get things working before upgrading to 8.5. Each time I did the install looked like ti went well, the Wizard was able to access and log into the database, but when I finally ran NetPerfMon there were zero nodes being polled. It always seemed like the database was not there (yet the database size was the same as the old server).

Now I started a case with Solarwinds Support so now I wait and see - I started the ticket on Friday (Dec. 21) and nothing yet, so Solarwinds must be taking holidays.

Hurry up and wait...

Has the name of your NPM server changed? Each node in the database is assigned to a polling engine. If the name of the server running NPM has a different name than the one assigned in the database then you will not see any nodes listed in System Manager.

The excerpt below from the NPM Administrators guide describes how to assign nodes to a new polling engine. This is from page 253 of the pdf version of the Administrators guide

Reassigning Nodes to a Polling Engine

Some circumstances may occur to create the need to assign nodes to a different polling engine. Such situations may arise if you have done any of the following:

•	Recently moved the Orion Network Performance Monitor server to a new server

•	Renamed the Orion Network Performance Monitor server

•	Merged two or more Orion Network Performance Monitor servers

If these or any other conditions present the need for reassignment, follow the instructions below to reassign nodes to a polling engine.

To reassign nodes to a polling engine:

1. Click Start > All Programs > SolarWinds Orion > Advanced Features > Orion Service Manager.

Note: Confirm that you stop the SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor Service on all polling engines.

2. Click Start > All Programs > SolarWinds Orion > Advanced Features > Poller Load Balancing.

3. Select the nodes you want to reassign.

Note: Use Shift + click to highlight multiple consecutive rows, and use Ctrl + click to highlight multiple non-consecutive rows.

4. If you want to change the database fields that are displayed for the nodes, select File > Settings.

Note: This can be useful in moving groups of nodes by displaying that field, and clicking the column heading to sort the view.

5. Click Polling Engines > Move Selected Nodes to *, substituting the target polling engine for *. The node is reassigned, and it reflects the name of the polling engine in the polling engine column.

6. Click Start > All Programs > SolarWinds Orion > Advanced Features > Orion Service Manager to restart Orion.

You bet the name has changed - the old (existing server) is called Baker and the new one is called Baker2. Couldn't have two machines with the same name on the same network. I will try this later today. It makes sense though - when I first started NetPerfMon.exe on the new server the window cam up asking which polling engine to connect to (Baker or Baker2), where it told me how many nodes/etc. were polled by each one (zero by the new).
